Neighbors for Neighbors Dorchester

Dorchester's soundboard for voices and springboard for action

Post your "Big Ideas" here. Think of these ideas as events or changes that affect the entire neighborhood or a large chunk of it, or that will not only have immediate effects but long-term effects.

I'll start this discussion by sharing one of my ideas:

I've been thinking about holding two expo-type events:

1. An event at either Tavolo Ristorante at Ashmont or a similar and nearby venue with the neighborhood associations in Lower Dot (Codman Square, Ashmont-Adams, Ashmont Hill, Cedar Grove, Lower Mills, St. Marks, Popes Hill, Florida Street, Talbot Norfolk, Fuller-Bailey, etc.) and Neighbors for Neighbors, along with local businesses and organizations.

2. An event with the Upper Dot associations (Jones Hill, Savin Hill, McCormack Civic, Hancock St, Uphams Corner, Bowdoin-Geneva, Greater Four Corners) and NFN, as well as local businesses, organizations, groups.

The goal of both events to highlight activities of local groups and get people plugged in.

JP had a similar event which sort of kicked off the spread of the networks to other neighborhoods back in October of 2008 and it went really well, and it increased their network participation and membership exponentially.

I think these are both good ideas and wonder how to effectively advertise. 'People' is broad - I understand we are looking to get Dorchester residents involved, but wonder if we can focus on bringing in the current movers and shakers - perhaps focus kind of on the 2nd echelon of movers and shakers. I think of people like myself who are active in other parts of the community, want to be active in Dorchester, but haven't had a lot of momentum up to this point (passively sitting on NFN etc.). I'm sure JP has historical knowledge from their event that they could share.

I was also thinking about a Meet-Up type event for young professionals in Dorchester. Maybe just a monthly social thing to build relationships and networking...maybe this already exists?

This was found on the "Lonely Planet" guide.

This is only one of many 1000's attacks on our neighborhoods. MIT, Harvard, Emerson and MGH housing has sent out messages warning against coming into the area.

I think it's time that all the Dorchester Civic Association's form a panel or committee to respond to these attacks. We are stronge in numbers.

In many cases it's only takes one letter to the editor to correct this very bigoted sentiment.

Not sure it exists as of yet - but it would be great to start a young professionals of dorchester civic association, maybe from all areas of Dot - especially would be great since the Fields Corner Civic Association is in Limbo right now, and there is a lot of coordination opportunities with Main Streets and all the great organizations in the area... how would we get something started like that?
